从艺历程：杰克·约翰森出生于夏威夷欧胡岛，并在那里长大。他是知名冲浪家杰夫·强森的儿子，很自然的对冲浪产生了兴趣与热情。强森五岁那年，在他父亲的朋友艾力克斯·康威尔（Alex Conwell）与萨那姆·布库司基的监督下，开始学习冲浪与滑板运动，并常与他最好的朋友班·史考莫一起去冲浪。十七岁时的杰克已经是冲浪界的奇才，并以最年轻参赛者的身份闯入世界级冲浪大赛（Pipeline Masters）决赛。然而，一场意外结束了杰克短暂的冲浪生涯。在那次冲浪意外中，杰克的手腕关节骨折、门牙断裂，并在前额和嘴部区域缝了超过150针。
在意外后，杰克彻底的对职业冲浪界中的竞争感到心灰意冷。“大伙儿为了争夺下个大浪而互相残杀，”强森说道，“我常开玩笑说，我是因为当时撞坏了脑袋才会变得如此柔和，但是我真的觉得那次意外让我变得更成熟了。”
